This column is a public recognition of one of the Friends Board who has done outstanding work on behalf of this organization.
If you want creativity, enthusiasm, ideas, and energy, you only have to look to Friends Board member Maureen “Mo” McMullen.
We were first introduced to Mo when she served as the guest speaker for our Fall membership tea in 2013. Her topic: Fashions from the ‘30s through the ‘60s, with a special focus on hats. Featured was a marvelous selection from her personal hat collection, all displayed creatively on plaster hands, stands, or mannequins. Mo walked us through each hat and related how the style of hat and the fashion hemline in each era reflected the philosophy of that decade. Through her collection and her experience in the retail trade, we relived those by-gone times.
Her years in retail fostered a sense of salesmanship that infused her luncheon speech and continues to be an asset in promoting our organization. She can be seen at each event passing out membership brochures and enrolling new members
.
She brings that same enthusiasm, fashion sense, and creativity to bear when working on Friends’ events. The Spring Strawberry Breakfast with table runners of aluminum foil that mimicked the clean modern lines of the Broad Art Museum, coupled with tiny reproductions of modern art works as tabletop displays were Mo’s idea. Together they made for a stunning and dramatic setting, perfect for our speaker from the Broad Museum. This is all Mo.
Not only is she is willing to step in and make a project work, she recognizes what needs to be done even when it’s not yet on the list. She and fellow Friends’ Board member Peggy Kelly wrestled the stunning sedum plantings en masse from the Joan Smith Memorial Planter outside of the library’s front door, wrangled them onto a child’s snow saucer, somehow got them into a car, and transported them all to Mo’s sunroom where they will winter over.
Whether she is offering a short course on napkin folding, helping to make the buffet an extravaganza of color, or adding special touches to a display or buffet, she does so with an artist’s eye. All the while she offers amusing commentary on the world around her, reflecting her wicked sense of humor.
Mo is both engaged in the Friends and herself engaging. She brings a real can-do attitude with her that adds fun to any Friends’ project and lightens the workload for all of us.
Mo McMullen, thank YOU for being a Friend!
